This is a geeky post

This is a geeky post. It is not sexy or insightful, it is just plain useful.

As part of my whole “I love to experience things” mantra for my life, I travel quite a bit. I love to throw some clothes in a backpack, book a flight and end up on a breathtaking island somewhere. I’m so good at it.

I’m also good at packing light and taking as little as possible, yet still having everything I need. I have a towel that packs into a bag the size of my fist and some teeny weeny bikinis (I’m always going somewhere where nobody knows me, or cares what I look like, so I don’t need to care either!). Today, I found a proper travel gem – the SKROSS World Adaptor.

For this particular trip, the only electronic item I am taking is my camera (no, not even a phone, f*ck that) so it needs to be able to be charged. Every trip I buy some sort of plug adaptor-type gadget, but this year, I found one that caters for freaking everything and will be TOTALLY useful for some good few international trips to come.

This baby transforms into whatever input and output plug you can think of, for over 150 countries. It also has an add-on with dual USB ports. Shut the front door.

It’s a bit more than I need for my one lonely camera charger, but I’m sure that my (equally mental) friends will be pleased to be able to charge all their devices and Future Me thanks me.

One more thing: PHILIPPINES BABY!

The art of giving this Christmas

It’s that time of the year again, when we eat too much, drink too much and spend too much money. Well, most of us in any case. For a huge portion of our population, it is a time where people feel the most at loss, especially when it comes to making it a special time for their children.

Enter Dlala Nje’s annual Christmas Party. These guys run a cultural games emporium in Ponte City for the children of Hillbrow and surrounds and throw a Christmas party for these kids every year. They provide a space for children to have fun in a safe environment and enjoy all sorts of activities for the afternoon. They even get a present each and a chance to sit on Santa’s lap!

For a lot of these children, this will be the only Christmas fun that they experience and the only gift that they receive. Orphanages in the area are also invited and it is an afternoon of (mad) fun with face painting, crafts, cupcakes, jumping castles, performances and of course, presents!

We managed to collect about 1000 gifts from many kind hearts (which wasn’t enough!) and spent our afternoon madly helping out with the party. There were so many smiling faces and I am so happy to have been a part of such an amazing initiative. I have all the time in the world for these guys and their cause.

Here are some pictures from the day. I hope that you will be there next year too, to help make a child smile, as Madiba would have liked it!

Look at my guns, boet

Life is hectic. Especially at this time of the year. I don’t know about you, but with me it seems like everyone woke up to the fact that they haven’t achieved everything they intended to this year, and need to squish it all into the last month. I have been insanely busy.

Sometimes we just need a boost to get us through.

I recently attended the XS Power Drink launch at Jozi X – an adventure centre in Bryanston which I’ve been wanting to attempt for a long time (due to lazy friends, I hadn’t been to the park up until then).

We were told to “dress comfortably for an afternoon of adventure”. So I promptly asked if we were going to win prizes from our activities (of which the answer was “Yes, awesome prizes”) and thus rocked up in full gym gear, ready to win. Because I like to win. I must win.

A few of these babies later, I was ready to WIN the obstacle course, which they reckon was pretty mild, but it was HARD, people, HARD.Lemon_Straight300dpi

Fuelled with all the energy stuff that they pack into these drinks, I obviously beat the big guy I was up against, because I am a machine. I mean, check out these guns!

And yes, my team won (obvs). I think we probably had more XS Power Drinks than the other guys…

So the low-down on the drink itself? It tastes good (unlike other energy drinks out there), is low in calories, contains no sugar and is high in Vitamin B. It’s available only from Amway – you can get it online at It’s available in SA in Electric Lemon Blast and Tropical Blast flavours (I enjoyed both and then enjoyed both again).

Uber chauffeur service now in Jozi!

Listen up, folks – you want to hear about this. I tried out Uber chauffeur service on the weekend and was thoroughly impressed.

It’s a 5 star chaffeur service, run exclusively by an app on your iPhone/Android. Here’s how it works:

  1. Download the UBER mobile app (iPhone/Androidor go online at m.uber.comand register (you will need to enter your credit card details to register, but don’t worry – your details are safe)
  2. Pinpoint your pickup location (and if you want a  quote and estimated trip time, your final destination too), and order your chauffeur.
  3. You will be sent a confirmation SMS and be provided with the details and photo of your driver, details of the car and registration as well as estimated time of arrival. You can contact the driver via phone/SMS at any time if you need to.
  4. Don’t worry about waiting outside: the app shows you exactly where your driver is and you’ll get a text message when your car is arriving.
  5. You will be picked up in a BMW 3/5 Series, Mercedes E /S Class  or Audi A6s. No messing around with average cars!

6. All payments are seamlessly processed with your account’s credit card, there’s no need to tip, and a receipt is immediately emailed after your ride.

Now here’s the part you really need to pay attention to…

Uber has sponsored some free rides to up to 1,000 readers! When you register, enter the promo code “PopcornCandi” (not case sensitive) and get 2 free rides up to R200 each. (Note: The promo is only available to new users)

Sensation SA Innerspace 2013 – My review

Many people are surprised to hear that I attend some of the big EDM parties – it doesn’t seem to fit with my perceived image.  Their idea of these things is grossly inaccurate and I find great entertainment is people’s facial expressions when I tell them I’m going to a “rave”. But I do love to immerse myself in a different world from time to time, where the DJ and visual effects take your heart right down into your stomach and then explode it out again through your brain (really not sure how else to explain it).

So here’s my review of the much talked about Sensation Innerspace party last night.

The visual effects were phenomenal. Really. The elaborate revolving stage and DJ booth, fountains of water and lights, massive white balls hanging from the ceiling that lit up different colours and moved with the music, fireworks, smoke explosions, digital screens, it was unbelievable.

Sensation SA Innerspace 2013

The Deluxe area was great. Clean bathrooms with free perfume samples, plenty of open space, seating, tables, couches, coat check, decent bars (although they ran out of a lot of basics quite early, which was really unacceptable, considering the ticket price that didn’t include any free drinks). The sound there was great. A walk down in the general area showed some serious sound echo issues, though, which would have driven me bonkers.

As for the music, well, it was less than desirable for me, I’m afraid. Put a decent trance DJ on the stage and I’m happy, but the music last night was really not my style. I don’t think it was a lot of people’s style either. The crowd was quite young, though and this was likely their “first rave”, so they would have enjoyed whatever EDM was blasting through the speakers, I’m sure (me=judging).

My summary? Great production and a phenomenal visual show. Ruined by the music, the “wet-behind-the-ears” crowd and being heavily overpriced.

Artistry’s YouthXtend Launch

In my quest to look after my skin and not look the age that I feel (that’s nobody’s business but mine), I was invited to Amway’s Artistry YouthXtend launch yesterday. Having not heard of or experienced the Artistry brand before, I had no idea what to expect and was pleasantly surprised.

Not only were we fed champagne and canapé’s and sketched in “timeless beauty”  (see my “horsesome” sketch below, not to be confused with “whoresome”), but we also got to play with some products from the range ourselves. I was told that the bottom half of my chin looked fabulous after some product testing with the “Lifting Smooth Foundation” 😉

They say that “…laboratory tests show that ARTISTRY YOUTH XTEND increases the production of the youth proteins by up to 280%.  The result: after one week of use, fine lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced. In essence, the skin’s healthy life is strengthened and extended.

The product range consists of 8 skincare products and a foundation make-up in different shades. The range is now available online at as well as at all Amway stores.”

Did you hear that? In one week I’ll be gorgeous!

Tongue-in-cheek aside, I was rather impressed with it all and am keen to try some of the products out (thanks again to Amway for packing our goodie bags with the skin care range).

Not (just) a pretty face – my introduction to real skin care

I’m no beauty blogger, let’s just get this straight. I think I’ve been for one facial in my life, getting my nails done bores me (unless I can play on my iPad at the same time) and I have a hairdresser friend that does house visits (to avoid the hair salon).

I had some photos taken on the weekend (for top secret, still-to-be-revealed reasons) and a close look at them made me realise that I needed help – in my face. You see, I have extremely sensitive skin. So bloody fussy that I can’t even wear eye make-up, which is always so damn pretty  – I hate those girls who can (i.e. everyone). I am also in the sun quite a bit with my horse-child, with mostly no suncream because that causes breakouts. With my blonde-hair-blue-eyes syndrome, this is all a recipe for disaster.

A friend took me to Tusc Medical Aesthetics in Sandton to have a chat about my issues and to get some samples of some real face care to see how that works with me. I was greeted by some perfect peaches-and-cream faces and had a skin analysis done. We sat for ages, talking about all my issues and how we’re going to fix them. I was introduced to Dermalogica and their Ultracalming range in particular (for stupid-sensitive skin like mine). I walked out with a bag full of samples like it’s Christmas and strict instructions of what to use when and where and how and how much and in what order.

Now this is a new concept to me. Don’t you just wash your face and then slap some moisturiser on? No siree…you do not. You pre-cleanse, then you cleanse, then you apply toners and concentrates and moisturisers and SPFs and barrier repairs. And then you’re beautiful 😉

I thought this was going to be a revolting schlep, but after just the first time I used the products, I felt relief in my skin. I didn’t realise how stressed it was until I pampered it with the right products. This stuff seems amazing.

Now I have a problem. I want to buy all of it. And it ain’t cheap. And did I tell you I have a horse? That ain’t cheap either. (So if any of you would like to send some social media work my way that would be great – check out my site at #ShamelessSelfPromotion)

I think that as we get older, we start to realise how important it is to take care of our skin. I’m on it now, I swear.
